The day following the death of Edward
the Confessor, Harold's coronation took place in Westminster Abbey. The first king to be
enthroned there. On his left hand side is Stigand, the excommunicated Archbishop of
Canterbury. Despite owing his position to the Godwins, Harold knew that his coronation
would not be considered valid if wholly performed by Stigand, he took steps to remedy
this, which will be discussed in the last section. |
