Charles the Simple
10th century king of France. By the early 900s the Viking raids were becoming more common place in northern Europe - including France. To counter these attacks, Charles the Simple in 911, made a pact with the leader of the Vikings. This Dane was known as Rollo. As a condition of the peace, he accepted baptism. In return he was given an area off the north eastern cost of France now known as Normandy or land of the Northmen.
