Charter

Title deeds from the 7th century onwards. Usually written under the direction of the king, church or anybody with power to grant land. Unfortunately they were not sealed and subsequently were quite often forged or altered. Owing to most of the population being illiterate, the writers of these documents signed for the witnesses. To make matters worse, they were in Latin. Many grants of land went to the wrong people - as you can imagine.
