Eldest problem son of William the Conqueror. Duke of Normandy from 1087. After a rebellion against his father in 1077 which was defeated, he rebelled again in 1082. Became duke on William's death and proclaimed himself king of England. He also declared war on his two brothers, William Rufus and Henry. He was defeated by Henry at the Battle of Tinchbrai. He was captured and put in prison where he remained until his death in 1134.
