King of Wessex ( c 993 - 1016 ). He was the son of Aethelred II. In 1015 he battled with the Danes and was made king of England by the people of London in 1016. He fought Canute ( Cnut ) at the battle of Ashingdon, where he was defeated. In a treaty with Canute, he was given Wessex whilst Canute had the rest.
