Anglo Saxon unit of land. The exact size varied but was the amount required for one man to support his family. The agricultural fertility would be taken into account. In the warmer fertile south, 50 acres would support a family whilst in the more baron areas of the north, a hide may have been as much as 200 acres. Tax was the based on the hide as well as military service. The hide later became the ploughland.
