Abbess of Whitby ( from 657 ) ( b 614 - 680 ). Grandniece of Edwin, the king of Northumbria. She became a mother superior in Hartlepool and progressed to found a abbey in Whitby in 657. It was in Whitby that the famous synod was held in 664 which discussed the differences between Celtic and Roman Christianity.
