London

London or Londinium founded by the Romans. It became their administrative centre and hence acquired immediate importance. Situated on the river Thames, London's importance waned following the Saxon invasions because of the heptarchy or seven kingdoms which each tended to have its own administrative centre. When England reunified in the 10th century, London again assumed its original importance. London is the capital city of England. It is impossible to write about London in any detail in this glossary. There is more detail in the text about it during Roman and Saxon times.
