Monasticism

The process of removing oneself from everyday society to follow a life of religion. Monasticism of sorts as always existed in Britain but the form we understand was first introduced in the 7th century. In the south by St Augustine and in the north by St Benedict. Monasteries were built up and down the country but the most famous were those on the islands on Iona and Lindisfarne. Monasteries were the subject of constant Viking attack.
