Replaced Tostig as earl of Northumbria in 1065. Defeated by a combined force of Harold Hardrada and Tostig at the battle of Fulford in 1066. An ally to Harold II, he was saved by him following the battle of Stamford Bridge the same year. In 1068 he rebelled against the Normans and was arrested then released. He joined Hereward the Wake in 1071, but was captured again and imprisoned. One of William the Conqueror's last acts was to release him. Unfortunately for him, he was arrested yet again by William II and died in prison.
