Northumbria

Area north of the river Humber populated by Angles and one of the heptarchy kingdoms. Formed in the 6th century by the joining of Bernicia and Deira. From 867 it was ruled by the Danes with their capital at York. It was famous throughout Europe for its monastic art especially from the monastery at Jarrow.
